Swastika flag in Rep. Dave Taylor's office could be an 'optical illusion,' sources say

Sources indicate that a flag resembling a swastika found in the D.C. office of Republican Rep. Dave Taylor might actually be an American flag with a concealed design that can only be detected by cameras, described as an “optical illusion.” This situation is akin to the flags that were covertly placed in numerous congressional offices and are currently being investigated.

The flag was observed on Wednesday in a photo of Taylor’s office desk, leading to an investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police into potential vandalism. According to individuals involved in the matter, the stars and stripes contained swastikas hidden within the ink and weaving, which were not immediately apparent to the naked eye. However, these symbols became more visible when captured in photos or video.

One source referred to the alleged method of creation as an “optical illusion,” suggesting the swastika was quite easy to overlook. This particular flag appears to be one of many that were delivered to various congressional offices earlier this year by an unidentified group. In one case, an official discarded the flag because the swastika was clearly visible, yet it was noted that the emblem in Taylor’s office only became apparent when photographed.

Authorities are currently looking into which group was responsible for distributing the flags and whether they were aware of the embedded symbols. It’s still not clear whether the intention behind this distribution was to subtly hand out flags with hidden swastikas, or to deliberately embarrass congressional offices by giving them flags with hateful imagery.

Taylor’s office released a statement on Wednesday expressing his strong condemnation of the symbol. “I am aware of images that appear to depict vile and highly inappropriate symbols in the vicinity of employees in my office,” he stated. “I condemn this in the strongest terms.” After discovering the flag, he took immediate action to request a thorough investigation from the U.S. Capitol Police, which is ongoing.

As of now, no further comments will be made by Taylor’s office until the investigation concludes. Representative Taylor, who serves Ohio’s 2nd District, is a member of both the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Agriculture Committee, and he is also the bipartisan co-chair of the Congressional Rural Broadband Caucus. The U.S. Capitol Police have not responded to requests for comment due to the closure of offices related to a federal government shutdown.
