Rangers Face Offense Struggles in Early Season Loss

TORONTO — The Rangers initially aimed to strengthen their defensive game this season, but they really need to shift their focus to offense soon.

Auston Matthews found the net just 58 seconds into overtime, leading to a 2-1 defeat for the Rangers on Thursday night. This marked their third consecutive loss and fourth in six games to start the 2025-26 season.

Some might say this team is just unlucky right now, while others could argue they’re simply struggling to find their rhythm.

What’s clear is that defensively, the Rangers seem altered compared to last season. They’ve showcased better organizational discipline, limiting odd-man rushes and overall mistakes.

Yet, offensively, they appeared to lack firepower.

It wasn’t until less than five minutes into the third period that the Rangers finally broke a lengthy, 170:39 scoreless stretch dating back to the third period of an October 11 matchup in Pittsburgh. Juuso Parsinen, who made his return after being a healthy scratch for the previous two games, redirected Braden Schneider’s shot to tie the game at 1-1.

The Rangers had endured eight consecutive scoreless periods prior to this, which felt particularly frustrating given their recent struggles at Madison Square Garden.

After several power plays were exchanged, the home team finally capitalized. William Nylander’s shot, which navigated through traffic, deflected around, and resulted in a goal from Matthew Knies, putting the Leafs ahead 1-0.
