Week 6 NFL Recap

Another week in the NFL means we’re starting to get a clearer picture of who’s really good and who might be great—it’s a bit obvious, right?

As the clock ticks down, some teams, like the Jets, could find themselves out of playoff contention. Sure, we’re just in the early stages of this long season, but you can see some teams are already gearing up while others seem a bit lost.

Who is to Blame for the Jets’ Struggles?

It always surprises me when a coach takes on a team with such a rough history. You sort of have to be confident—maybe even a bit cocky—to step into that role, and, well, most coaches think they can turn things around.

Aaron Glenn might be having second thoughts. The Jets are looking pretty lost right now and, honestly, they could use a new head coach. Garrett Wilson has potential, but Justin Fields seems to be in over his head. If I had to point fingers right now, I think it might be Aaron Glenn, though there are forces at play that are beyond just coaching decisions.

There’s likely a lot of accountability to go around, but it’s tough not to critique Glenn. Defensive coaches often have a knack for assembling strong teams and moving on to new challenges. Yet, the offensive line seems to lag behind, never quite reaching the same level.

For example, DeMeco Ryans succeeded by choosing the right coach to guide C.J. Stroud while also keeping one of the top defenses intact. Glenn didn’t go that route. Instead, he and the general manager decided to gamble on Justin Fields instead of pursuing a younger quarterback for backup. That hasn’t panned out, and it might just cost him his job by season’s end.

The Titans are struggling at 1-5 and recently let go of Brian Callahan, while Glenn sits at 0-6. I honestly can’t see a quick turnaround for the Jets—will they allow themselves to get stuck in this cycle?

Based on how many struggling NFL teams operate, I can’t help but feel this would not end well.

I hate to say it, but I think the Chiefs have sort of found their groove again.

Patrick Mahomes continues to impress with his speed. He and Andy Reid really know how to utilize their players, like Skye Moore and Kadarius Toney, even if they don’t have exceptional talents. With Xavier Worthy back for the last four games, the Chiefs resemble what fans expect from a Mahomes-led offense.

Good for them, but not so great for the rest of the league that might have been hoping for a shift among the top teams.

Last Sunday night was certainly a strong showing. The Chiefs managed to contain one of the best offenses in the league and scored more than enough points to win.

With so many feeling fatigued from the Chiefs’ dominance, it makes sense why people jumped to call them a bad team earlier. But we should have been cautious. This squad knows how to navigate tough times, and they seem to be adjusting as fall settles in.

They certainly deserve skepticism, though.

Big Moves After Six Weeks?

I’m ready to throw my support behind the Colts. I think they could be a Super Bowl contender like many of the top teams. But, I’m not entirely sure about Shane Steichen’s choice to go back and start Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson.

It’s clear that Richardson, who hurt himself in warm-ups, hadn’t played all that well prior. However, Steichen was already on thin ice, so going with Jones seemed risky. The only parallel I can think of is when Pete Carroll chose rookie Russell Wilson over free agent Matt Flynn.

I’d like to see the Eagles take a step back now that they’re on a two-game losing streak. The Giants managed to snag a win off the Chargers, mainly due to their defensive efforts against a weak offensive line. The Eagles faced no such issues but still struggled against the Giants.

Looking at their upcoming games against several NFC North teams, including the Vikings and Lions, they really need to find their rhythm soon—otherwise, they might slip further behind.

Teams That Are Underrated?

The Seahawks have been surprisingly impressive, especially with new quarterback Sam Darnold, showing that his previous year in Minnesota wasn’t just a fluke. They sit at 4-2 and are strong on both sides of the ball.

Last season, the Seahawks were the only ten-win team that didn’t make the playoffs, which had to sting. Now, it seems Coach Mike McDonald is using that as motivation to keep pushing the team forward.

The Patriots made headlines last week with their victory over the Bills, but they followed that up with a more modest win against the Saints. Still, I feel they’re charging ahead.

It could be a bit premature to think New England is ready to take the AFC East, but I’m convinced they’re in the playoff mix. Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye seem like a great fit, and the mood in Boston is currently quite optimistic.
