Explosion in Bucharest Leaves Three Dead and Over a Dozen Injured
A significant explosion occurred on Friday in a two-story apartment building in Romania’s capital, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuring at least 13 others, according to officials.
The blast impacted the fifth and sixth floors of the eight-story structure, as reported by the capital’s Emergency Situation Supervision Office. In response to the incident on Kalea Lahovei in Sector 5, more than a dozen emergency vehicles were deployed, including 11 fire engines and four mobile intensive care units.
While the cause of the explosion remains uncertain, Distriga’s Sud L’Etere, the local gas distributor, indicated it had received complaints about a gas smell the previous day. They detected natural gas in the building and had sent teams to disconnect the supply.
The company mentioned that when they were contacted again on Friday, the previously placed safety stickers had been found “broken.” They offered heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and others impacted by the incident.
According to Romania’s Ministry of Health, the victims sustained numerous injuries and burns. Later, the ministry reported that one deceased individual was discovered under a concrete slab on the sixth floor. At least 13 individuals were transported to nearby hospitals.
All residents were evacuated, and search teams were deployed to locate anyone trapped inside. Additionally, students and staff from a nearby school were also evacuated as a safety measure, as noted by the Bucharest School Inspectorate.
“A terrible tragedy struck Bucharest today,” remarked Stelian Boujduvianu, the acting mayor, in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts are with the families and all those experiencing unimaginable challenges…We won’t leave anyone alone in this tragedy.”
Video footage shared by emergency officials revealed extensive damage to the building’s facade, which appeared to have blown out nearby windows as well. Debris was scattered across the street.
Emergency authorities reported that another apartment building in close proximity also sustained damage, with parts of its facade torn off following the explosion.
