Graham Platner Faces Scrutiny Over Past Social Media Posts

Old online statements that seem to endorse violence for political ends have come under fresh examination concerning a progressive candidate from Maine running for Senate.

Graham Platner, a veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps and Army, as well as an oyster farmer, is gaining momentum in his campaign against the long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins. Back in 2018 on Reddit, Platner remarked that “all” police are part of a corrupt system and identified himself as a “communist.”

He further stated that anyone wanting to combat fascism should probably consider being armed, and proclaimed that “an armed working class is essential for economic justice.”

A post highlighted by CNN and Politico was removed prior to the onset of Platner’s Democratic campaign in August.

In a statement to CNN about his past remarks, he explained that he felt lost online during a difficult time, reflecting on a disillusionment with the government, particularly after having seen a friend die while deployed. He admitted that he made “stupid jokes” and engaged in arguments, but insisted, “I’m not a socialist. I’m a small business owner, a Marine Corps veteran.”

The recent assassinations of various political figures have heightened focus on historical comments advocating violence within political discourses. For instance, earlier this year, there’s been intense scrutiny of a document by Jay Jones, the Democratic attorney general candidate, which drew disturbing parallels between a state official and notorious dictators.

Amid this backdrop, the discourse on violent political rhetoric has gained traction, particularly as young Republicans’ past derogatory and violent online messages have come to light.

Platner has disavowed his prior comments, stating, “I don’t want people to judge me by what I said during my most reckless online moments. That doesn’t reflect who I am today.” He has garnered support from prominent figures like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and has been actively campaigning across Maine, drawing significant crowds.

In his early fundraising efforts, Platner managed to raise over $3 million within his first six weeks as a candidate, underlining his potential strength as a newcomer in Maine’s political landscape. His platform includes advocating for universal healthcare and restrictions on arms sales to Israel, which represent central tenets for many on the left.

However, the primary race for Senate in Maine took a notable turn recently when Governor Janet Mills announced her own candidacy, inspired by encouragement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer believes Mills offers the strongest chance against Collins, who is the only Republican senator facing reelection in a state that leaned Democratic in the last presidential election.

Another Democratic candidate, Jordan Wood, also entered the race but recently reported fundraising numbers that were competitive with Platner’s. Meanwhile, Dan Kleban, another Senate candidate, decided to suspend his campaign after Mills’ announcement and subsequently endorsed her.

Senator Collins, who has been serving since 1996, represents a moderate Republican stance and chairs the influential Appropriations Committee. Having won her previous elections by substantial margins, she is a formidable candidate moving toward the 2026 elections.

Efforts to reach Platner’s campaign for further comments were unsuccessful, leaving many questions lingering about his past and future in this election.
