John Bolton turned himself in to authorities on Friday morning.
John Bolton, the former National Security Adviser, surrendered to authorities following an indictment by a federal grand jury for mishandling classified information.
Upon arriving at the courthouse for his initial court appearance, Mr. Bolton remained silent. This came after being indicted on 18 counts just a day prior.
Reportedly, Bolton was seen leaving his residence in Bethesda, Maryland, in a black SUV on Friday morning.
He entered District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, shortly after 8:30 a.m. ET.
A grand jury has formally indicted John Bolton.
NBC News reported that the indictment alleges he used personal email and messaging systems to transmit national defense information and send classified documents marked as top secret.
Prosecutors are looking into whether Bolton improperly stored classified materials after his tenure in the first Trump administration. He faces eight counts for transmitting national defense information and ten counts for unlawfully retaining that information.
The grand jury’s indictment, filed in the District of Maryland, contends that Bolton transmitted national defense information and classified documents through personal means. This information supposedly detailed future attacks, foreign adversaries, and connections in foreign policy.
Additionally, the indictment accuses Bolton of unlawfully keeping documents with national defense information at his home, containing details about enemy leaders and the methods used to gather intelligence on foreign adversaries.
