Democrats Face Backlash Over Government Shutdown and Trump’s Executive Power
When Democrats rejected the Continuing Resolution (CR) proposed by Republicans to maintain federal funding, they possibly underestimated the repercussions of empowering President Donald Trump with significant executive authority.
Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo stated on “Sunday Morning Futures” that the Democrats’ decision to initiate a government shutdown was a “mistake.” This action effectively granted them the ability to eliminate government projects without consequence, including a crucial multibillion-dollar initiative that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has championed.
The shutdown, referred to as the Schumer Shutdown, commenced on October 1 after Democrats demanded the renewal of expired insurance premium credits from the Affordable Care Act in exchange for their votes. It seems like a short-sighted move; granting Trump expansive powers could mean cutting back on left-leaning programs funded by taxpayer money.
In a discussion with Bartiromo regarding the Democratic Party’s protests in Washington, D.C., where Schumer was expected to speak, President Trump indicated that Schumer might lose a $20 billion project he has tirelessly worked to fund.
Trump remarked, “Well, Chuck, you know, is at the bottom. He’s getting beaten up by all the people voting against him. What he did is he did the right thing years ago with something like this. And he was hurt by the party. It’s not… I don’t think it matters to him. I think he would do anything because he’s really dead.”
He further stated, “I’m going to end this $20 billion project that Mr. Schumer has been fighting for for 15 years. This project is pretty much gone at this point.”
According to reports, the project Trump referred to is Project Gateway.
Schumer has been advocating for this initiative since at least 2012. Project Gateway aims to upgrade and expand rail services along a vital 16-mile stretch of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Newark, New Jersey, and New York Penn Station. The plan focuses on constructing a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River, improving aging infrastructure like the Portal Bridge, and enhancing Amtrak and New Jersey transit services.
The project has faced numerous challenges, with costs soaring excessively due to bureaucratic inefficiencies and unnecessary enhancements. Originally estimated to cost around $13.5 billion in 2011, the total expenses could now reach $42 billion due to additional components that many critics deem unnecessary.
Under the Biden administration, Schumer finally secured funding to advance Gateway in 2021 through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which allocated substantial funds for the NEC’s upgrades. However, by 2025, excavation for the tunnel had not begun. The start of the “Schumer Shutdown” led Trump to cancel the Hudson Tunnel project, influenced by suspended Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies.
Democrats continue to hold the federal government at a standstill, affecting millions of Americans who rely on federal aid and leaving many government employees, including military personnel, unpaid. This strategy may grant Trump a unique opportunity to dismantle initiatives like Gateway that Schumer supports. It’s a tactical move aimed at demonstrating how the Democrats’ stalling has compelled Trump and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries back to the negotiating table.
