Tensions escalate before 'No Kings' protests: Key information to understand

As “No King Day” unfolds again in 2025 on Saturday, the divide between Trump administration critics and supporters is becoming increasingly pronounced.

Organizers anticipate that millions will participate in over 2,000 protests across the nation, with gatherings expected in major cities from Los Angeles to Boston. The demonstrations are being organized through the “Norkings” website.

In Washington, D.C., a rally is planned for this Saturday, a stark contrast to the first “No Kings Day” when no march occurred. Protesters are likely to gather outside the Capitol, which was the site of a military celebration for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. military coinciding with President Trump’s birthday on June 14.

The anticipated demonstrations have sparked a back-and-forth debate among Democrats and Republicans regarding their significance. Republican figures, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Steve Scalise, have labeled the protests a “rally of hate for America.”

Johnson expressed concerns over a potential “Hate America” rally scheduled for October 18, suggesting that pro-Hamas and Antifa supporters would join.

The mention of Antifa comes as the Trump administration intensifies efforts against the group. Following an executive order designating Antifa a terrorist organization, two individuals were charged last Thursday in connection with a shooting at an immigration detention center in Alvarado, Texas.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also described the upcoming protests as “antifa-related” and indicated that he would deploy the Texas National Guard. Even though this decision was made, Austin’s Mayor Kirk Watson clarified that the National Guard’s role would be to assist local law enforcement in addressing acts of violence or vandalism.

Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia stated that he had activated the National Guard to respond to these protests alongside local police forces.

You know, Youngkin emphasized the importance of the right to free speech and peaceful assembly, but made it clear that this right does not extend to violence or property destruction.

Various states and cities are already preparing for protests, with notable events in Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Portland’s “No Kings” protest is set for Grant Park from noon to 2 PM, while another will occur at the USS Oregon Memorial in Waterfront Park from noon to 4 PM.

Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, are urging supporters of democracy to participate in these events peacefully.

Senator Bernie Sanders responded directly to the “Hate America Rally” label, asserting that the intent behind No Kings Day is quite the opposite.

He stated, “This is a rally of millions who value American freedom and will not let you, or President Trump, turn us into a dictatorship.”

Ezra Levin, an organizer for No Kings Day, expressed concerns about the attempts to discourage participation. He acknowledged that while not everyone faces the same risks, it would require courage for those attending the events on Saturday.
