New York Republicans Disband Young Republicans Group Following Controversy

On Friday, the New York Republican State Committee made the unanimous decision to dissolve the Young Republicans of the Empire State. This move came after screenshots surfaced from Telegram chats where members were found using anti-Semitic and racist slurs.

Ed Cox, the chairman of the New York Republican Party, expressed his disapproval, stating, “The Young Republicans have already suffered gross mismanagement, and vile language like the one uttered in the group chat has no place in our party or its subordinate organizations.”

The conversations, initially highlighted by Politico, involved young leaders from several states, including New York, Kansas, Arizona, and Vermont. Reports indicate that Peter Giunta, who is the chief of staff for New York State Representative Michael O’Reilly, created the chat during his campaign for chairman of the group.

One particularly troubling message reportedly included support for Hitler, with comments about Giunta saying, “I love Hitler.”

Senator Samuel Douglas from Vermont was also identified as part of the Telegram group. Following this revelation, Vermont Governor Phil Scott called for Douglas’s resignation. Conversely, Vice President Vance suggested that the members involved were merely “kids” making mistakes and should not face major repercussions.

Vance remarked, “I’m not going to cancel my kids because they did something stupid in a group chat. The reality is that kids do stupid things, especially young boys, and they tell edgy and offensive jokes. That’s what kids do.” He expressed concern about a society where a child’s foolish joke could ruin their life.

However, many in the party strongly denounced the behavior reflected in the chats. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana emphasized that this behavior contradicts Republican principles, which are rooted in values like individual freedom and the rule of law.

Johnson elaborated, “Do you want me to explain it to you now? It leads to individual freedom, limited government, the rule of law, peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, free markets, human dignity, and human flourishing.”

Alex DeGrasse, an adviser to New York State Representative Elise Stefanik, urged those involved in the offensive statements to resign immediately.

Giunta responded by highlighting that he does not employ any of the chat’s participants. Nonetheless, in August, he had previously awarded Stefanik the New York Young Republicans’ Congressman of the Year title.

Stefanik praised Giunta’s leadership, stating, “We need a new generation of leadership, and YR will be a critical part of our mission to save New York.”
