Zelensky Proposes Drone Exchange with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Friday that he has a proposal for President Donald Trump involving a potential exchange of drone capabilities for the U.S.’s precision long-range Tomahawk missile.
“If you aim to strike military targets, you require thousands of drones,” Zelenskiy stated, emphasizing that modern warfare relies on a variety of technologies. “Ukraine possesses thousands of drones, yet lacks Tomahawks. That’s why we need them,” he added. He noted that while the U.S. has access to powerful missiles, it could also benefit from having many unmanned aircraft.
“That’s where collaboration can happen,” he said. When questioned by reporters about his interest in a drone deal with Ukraine, Trump replied, “Yes, I would.” He went on to mention that the U.S. has a significant drone fleet and both manufactures and purchases high-quality drones from various suppliers.
However, Trump acknowledged that supplying Ukraine with advanced missiles capable of reaching targets beyond Moscow would be an escalation of the situation. “The Tomahawk is a big issue,” he remarked, stressing his duty to ensure American defense capabilities are robust. “You never really know what can unfold in times of war and peace, right? Anything can happen,” he noted.
On the same day, Trump expressed skepticism about granting Zelensky access to Tomahawks, citing hopes for an end to the ongoing conflict. Additionally, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin arranged to meet in person in Hungary, though a date has yet to be determined. It appears that Zelensky may not attend this gathering.
