Revolutionizing Education in America
There’s a shift happening in American education, spearheaded by first lady Melania Trump and the White House. They’re confronting the alarming statistics around reading and education, along with the challenge of readying children for the artificial intelligence (AI) future.
On March 24, Melania Trump introduced the “Growing Up the Future” summit. The focus? Highlighting how AI can create opportunities for children, not as something to fear or lean on, but as a supportive learning tool.
One notable attendee was Mackenzie Price, CEO of Alpha Schools, a private company establishing schools nationwide. Their mission is to encourage children to view AI as a helpful learning companion, while also advocating for essential “life skills” that will enable them to lead fulfilling lives.
As concerns grow that AI might take over not just our jobs, but also cultural dynamics, it’s crucial to ensure our children are prepared for these challenges. The White House is not alone in this mission; there’s a robust education movement gaining traction across the country.
This movement is centered around the idea that future generations must be equipped to defend themselves against manipulation and misinformation, all while thriving in an AI-driven world. Known as the Classical Education Movement, it’s led by a dedicated group of teachers, parents, and philosophers who are weary of the educational system turning into a site of ideological indoctrination. Unlike some advocates on the left, this movement prioritizes the benefits of all children—irrespective of their economic background or ethnicity—and aims to uphold the principles of Western civilization.
The Importance of Classical Education
Classical education is content-rich, focusing on the development of wisdom and virtue through the study of liberal arts. It begins with grammar, logic, and rhetoric and expands to history and classic literature. This approach has upheld Western and Judeo-Christian civilization for centuries.
Instead of offering a range of superficial electives or overemphasizing vocational training, classical education is rooted in traditional scholarship and great texts. It seeks to educate the whole child, fostering a lifelong learning desire, nurturing respect for traditional values, and instilling the significance of citizenship and leadership.
As the ancient philosopher Epictetus once said, “Only the educated are free.” This philosophy underlines the belief that education should help children appreciate the good, true, and beautiful aspects of America and Western civilization.
School Choice and Rapid Growth
Currently, there are over 1,500 classical education schools—public, private, and charter—across the United States, serving about 700,000 students in 2024. The number is rising quickly, with more than 250 new schools having opened since 2020. This private initiative is addressing the education gap left by public schools and their affiliated unions. Often, students miss out on genuine learning experiences, as classrooms can become platforms for teachers’ personal political agendas.
Classical education aims to equip children with critical thinking skills rather than indoctrination. If there’s a skill that will prepare younger generations for the future and complement modern classroom technology, including AI, it’s the principles of traditional education.
For example, Alpha Schools is implementing innovative teaching methods that use AI to enhance students’ exploration of subjects like history or geometry. Afternoons are reserved for ‘life skills’, covering practical knowledge like riding a bike or managing a bank account, depending on the students’ age.
Reading, writing, and reasoning—fundamental aspects of classical education—are just as crucial as practical skills like financial literacy. So why not integrate traditional subjects with modern life skills? Why not delve into the lasting principles of thinkers like Plato and Aristotle, or influential American authors like Mark Twain and E.B. White, to better prepare children for the technological landscape ahead?
In essence, classical education presents a significant opportunity. It encourages a more hopeful outlook on an AI-driven world while recognizing America’s children as invaluable intellectual resources.
