Tragic Death of Massachusetts School Employee
A 53-year-old employee at a Massachusetts school passed away on Thursday following an incident involving a 14-year-old student who allegedly punched her in the chest during a dormitory conflict, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
The incident took place at about 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday at Meadow Ridge Academy in Swansea, where the student attempted to exit the dormitory building without permission. Reports indicate that during the confrontation, the student kicked Amy Morrell, the staff member, as she and other employees tried to intervene.
Sadly, Morrell collapsed at the scene. Emergency responders quickly performed CPR and transported her to the hospital where she was reported to be in serious condition overnight. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead the next day. As of now, the exact cause of death has not been officially released.
The 14-year-old student has been charged with assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury and was arraigned in juvenile court on Thursday. The investigation is currently being conducted by both the Swansea Police and the Massachusetts State Police Criminal Division.
Meadow Ridge Academy is known as a therapeutic boarding school tailored for youth aged 12 to 21 facing various challenges, including behavioral and mental health issues. It’s located roughly 80 miles south of Boston.
This isn’t the first time Meadow Ridge has faced scrutiny. A report by the Disability Law Center uncovered instances of abuse and neglect between 2014 and 2016, leading to remedial actions by the school such as improved surveillance and staff training measures.
In light of Morrell’s passing, a spokesperson for the academy expressed deep sorrow for the loss and indicated that counseling services are available for both students and staff, extending heartfelt condolences to Morrell’s family during this difficult period.
Described as dedicated and passionate about her work, friends and family were shocked by the news of Morrell’s death. One close acquaintance reflected, “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call today.” It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the unpredictable events that can occur in an educational setting.
