Shapiro Reflects on Biden’s Election Challenges
In a recent chat on “The Breakfast Club,” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro shared his experience of discussing electoral challenges with then-President Joe Biden when he was the assumed Democratic nominee for the 2024 election.
It’s been almost a year since the election, an event many Democrats viewed as a turning point, yet the party is still grappling with what went amiss over the past years. Shapiro, identifying as a moderate who engages with conservatives, revealed his straightforward dialogue with Biden during that period.
“I went right to the president and explained what I perceived as issues in Pennsylvania. I was quite honest,” Shapiro recounted. “We met at a coffee shop in Harrisburg—it’s been mentioned before. He asked me, ‘How are you doing?’ and I responded honestly, ‘I’m not doing well.’
He then laid out his concerns to Biden. “The polls indicate it’s not working,” he pointed out. “I believe costs were not being adequately addressed. This was a significant theme in the campaign and a major concern for Pennsylvania voters. I sensed that people were doubting if he was capable of handling the job.”
Shapiro emphasized that his approach is rooted in direct communication. “I think if you have something important to share, you should do it face-to-face. The president deserves that respect,” he remarked.
When asked how Biden reacted to this candid assessment, Shapiro noted, “I think he listened. He mentioned that the poll numbers were different than I indicated, and he seemed determined to press on. Ultimately, that’s his choice.”
Shapiro also voiced concerns that Biden’s team might not be transparent with the party’s leadership. During the interview, Charlamagne the God suggested that future Democratic candidates need to be more outspoken about past mistakes, even shifting blame if necessary. Shapiro, however, maintained a different stance.
“I don’t believe you get ahead by undermining others,” he said. “Success shouldn’t come from casting others aside. Instead, it’s about sharing your vision and demonstrating what you stand for.”
Interestingly, Shapiro’s involvement with Biden’s administration came under scrutiny, especially regarding discussions about the Democratic Party’s challenges in Pennsylvania during Trump’s campaign.
