George Springer Faces Booing After Injury in ALCS

George Springer is familiar with getting booed, but the reaction he received on Friday night seemed to push boundaries.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider criticized Mariners fans for jeering Springer, who had been hit by a pitch in the knee during Toronto’s 6-2 loss in Game 5 of the ALCS at T-Mobile Park.

“I understand it’s an intense environment here, and it’s exciting to play in. But those fans who booed him should reflect on the type of player he is,” Schneider noted after the game, as his team fell behind 3-2 in the series.

“I’ll just say that when you see a player get hit in the knee and clearly in pain, having 40,000 people cheering him on isn’t right.”

In the seventh inning, Springer went down after taking a 95.6 mph sinker from Seattle’s Brian Wu, with the Blue Jays leading 2-1 at the time.

Despite being heckled by Mariners supporters throughout the series, Springer managed to get up, although limping to first base resulted in more boos before he was substituted by Joey Loperfido.

Toronto’s captain confirmed that Springer suffered a right knee contusion, but X-rays showed no serious injury.

He is optimistic that the 36-year-old slugger will be fit to play in Game 6 on Sunday back in Toronto.

“George is incredibly tough,” Schneider emphasized. “It would be a big blow for him to miss Sunday’s game.”

Springer has yet to escape the shadow of his controversial tenure with the 2017 Houston Astros, where he was seen as a key figure in the scandal. Plus, he remains one of the standout performers in postseason history, continuing to excel in October following a strong 2025 season.

This postseason, Springer has posted a .933 OPS and hit three home runs, tying him with Bernie Williams for the fourth-most postseason home runs in history.

In the early part of the game, he even hit a game-tying RBI double against the left-field wall, marking his sixth consecutive extra-base hit in the playoffs.

Although Toronto briefly held the lead, Seattle responded in the eighth inning with a grand slam from Eugenio Suarez, ultimately sealing the game.

To advance to the World Series against the Dodgers, the Blue Jays will need to secure victories in the next two games at home after losing the first two games in Toronto.
