Progress in Middle East and Ukraine Peace Efforts
President Donald Trump kicked off the week by making significant strides toward a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. By the week’s end, he was already looking ahead at the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
On Monday, President Trump conferred with Israeli lawmakers in Congress. He then traveled to Egypt for discussions with leaders from various regional powers, including Qatar and Türkiye. During his visit, he urged countries in the area to “forget old feuds and bitter hatreds.”
“We finally have peace in the Middle East,” Trump announced to reporters in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, adding that this achievement was a straightforward depiction of peace in the region.
Could This Peace Plan Help Ukraine?
“We’ve been hearing about it for years, but no one ever thought we’d get this far. And now we’re getting there,” he reflected.
The peace agreement for the Middle East stipulates that Hamas must return any hostages within 72 hours of the agreement’s signing. It also includes provisions for the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the complete disarmament of Hamas.
Now, Trump is keen on addressing the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House on Friday.
Trump Aims for Resolution
Trump indicated that with the momentum gained from the Middle East agreement, there’s potential for resolution in Ukraine, although he acknowledged the “tremendous bad blood” between Putin and Zelensky that complicates matters. He stated, “It is precisely this issue that underpins reconciliation. I think we will achieve it. Just as in the Middle East, it must last and be permanent.”
He commented on the uniqueness of the Middle East agreement, noting, “It’s a much more complicated situation. We have 59 countries involved, and all of them have agreed. Most people didn’t think it was possible. I truly believe this is going to happen. I had a very good talk with President Putin yesterday; I think he wants to get it done.”
World Leaders React
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy expressed optimism about Trump’s potential role in mediating a resolution to the conflict. “President Trump has shown the world that he can manage a ceasefire in the Middle East. That’s why I hope he will do this, and we will have such great success. It’s a huge opportunity for Ukraine, and I hope that President Trump can manage it,” he said.
