Sunday shows preview: Shutdown stretches into third week; Trump turns focus to Russia-Ukraine war

Negotiations between Congressional Democrats and Republicans to reopen the federal government have stalled, leading to a continued shutdown that is now into its third week.

This extended closure is setting records, as Friday marked one of the longest shutdowns the U.S. has experienced. Should it persist through the end of October, a significant number of federal employees, including those in the military, may miss their next full paycheck.

The enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is set to begin on November 1st. Democrats are pushing to extend the healthcare tax credit that will expire at year’s end, aiming to encourage Republicans to enhance Obamacare subsidies ahead of the public offering.

Failure to intervene in Congress could lead to rising premiums, affecting about 3 to 5 million people’s insurance if the tax credit lapses.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York expressed concerns at a Thursday press conference, stating, “The American people are facing one of the most devastating crises we’ve ever faced.” He criticized Republicans for their shifting narratives, emphasizing the need to align with the American populace.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) are expected to champion government reopening within their parties. They have agreed to participate in discussions on C-SPAN’s “Ceasefire” program once the shutdown concludes, and both are scheduled to appear on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday.

They might also address the oath of office for Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who recently won a special election to take her late father’s congressional seat.

Prime Minister Johnson has maintained that he will only take office once the House of Commons is called back to Washington for the traditional swearing-in. Grijalva commented that this would serve as the 218th signature needed to push a bill requiring the Department of Justice to release files related to the late convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

Grijalva mentioned feeling like “a tourist in Washington, D.C.” during an interview with CNN.

On a different note, President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected on Sunday’s program. Their meeting at the White House followed Zelensky’s discussions with various energy and military executives about Ukraine’s needs amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

During these talks, Trump mentioned the complexities involved in providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, describing the discussions as “interesting” and “friendly,” while advocating for a ceasefire between the nations.

Zelensky reiterated the importance of staying aligned during a press briefing outside the White House.

Meanwhile, Trump, Johnson, Jeffries, and others on Sunday shows are likely to discuss the upcoming “No Kings Day” protests planned across the country. Johnson has labeled these demonstrations as a “Hate America rally,” while Democrats have encouraged peaceful protest.

“The theory we have now is that they are planning a ‘Hate America’ rally on the National Mall on October 18th,” Johnson commented, alleging participation from pro-Hamas and Antifa groups.

Jeffries, however, had previously described protests aimed at critiquing the Trump administration as integral to the American experience.
