Exploring the Connection Between Faith and Healing
Many individuals seek comfort in the Bible during both difficult and triumphant times, and some believe it can guide their physical health as well. Dr. Josh Ax and Jordan Rubin, co-authors of “The Biblio Diet,” argue that adapting the ancient foods mentioned in the Bible into modern diets might enhance overall health and even address serious medical conditions.
“I think the Bible is the best health book ever written,” Dr. Ax, a natural medicine doctor from Tennessee, mentioned in a conversation. He suggests that those facing various health issues, like anxiety, heart disease, or infertility, could find solutions within its pages.
Faith and Health Through Biblical Principles
Both Ax and Rubin have dealt with significant health challenges that, surprisingly, strengthened their faith and motivated them to develop their ideas. Rubin’s health journey began in his teens when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and later faced a severe cancer diagnosis. After consulting numerous doctors with little success, he encountered someone who encouraged him to try a Biblical diet as a potential remedy.
“After focusing on a healthier diet and incorporating spiritual practices, I overcame what was labeled terminal cancer without resorting to chemotherapy or surgery,” Rubin explained.
Dr. Ax’s path toward health started with helping his mother navigate breast cancer. He crafted a diet featuring Biblical foods such as pomegranates and olive oil, combined with prayer and faith. And when he encountered health issues from a medical procedure, he returned to these principles for his recovery.
“I was guided by the diagnosis of an extraordinary doctor, who emphasized hope and miracles, and I believe that’s why I’m now completely healed,” he shared.
What Constitutes a Biblical Diet?
The Bible discusses food frequently, and both authors assert that these principles are relevant today. Foods like red meat, whole grain sourdough, olive oil, dairy products, pomegranates, figs, and local raw honey are highlighted as beneficial. They argue that red meat can be viewed as a “superfood” rich in essential nutrients, while bread, if properly sourced and prepared, can fit into a healthy diet.
“Since Jesus is called the bread of life, it doesn’t make sense to entirely dismiss bread,” Rubin said, emphasizing the importance of the quality of ingredients and preparation methods.
In addition to various foods, olive oil is noted for supporting various aspects of health, while high-quality dairy can also enhance wellbeing. The authors advocate for consuming whole, raw, grass-fed products and local honey as a natural sweetener with health benefits.
Foods to Avoid
They caution against consuming foods considered “unclean,” as per Leviticus, including pork and shellfish, as these animals do not process toxins well. Furthermore, modern processed foods with high fructose corn syrup and other additives should also be avoided, as even seemingly healthy options can turn harmful when over-processed.
Spiritual Practices and Health
Apart from diet, Ax and Rubin emphasize spiritual disciplines like fasting, which they see as a vital healing practice. “Fasting is among the most significant advancements for one’s health,” Dr. Ax noted, suggesting even short periods of fasting can lead to substantial health benefits.
For some, fasting provides a spiritual connection and clarity, leading to deeper relationships with faith. Rubin echoed this sentiment, noting that focusing on emotional and spiritual health was crucial during his recovery from cancer.
Navigating Health with Biblical Guidance
While they believe the “Biblio Diet” can offer significant health benefits, it’s not a universal fix. “This can work well for many, but individuals may need to customize their approach,” Dr. Ax said. They encourage integrating Biblical teachings into modern diets without strict avoidance of foods that might traditionally be seen as indulgent.
For those facing health struggles, staying calm and open to multiple perspectives is essential. “Take a breath, trust in the healing you’re seeking, and above all, prioritize what feels right for you,” Rubin advised.
In their view, maintaining health is a form of worship, a way of honoring the body created by God. “I believe God wants us to excel in all aspects of our lives,” Dr. Ax concluded, suggesting that physical health can be a powerful witness to spiritual truths.
