Protests break out at California girls' track event over dispute between the White House and Newsom's office regarding transgender issues.

California Women’s Track and Field Championships Disrupted by Protest

The opening day of the California women’s track and field state championships faced disruption from a political protest for the second consecutive year. A demonstration titled “Save Girls Sports,” organized by former NCAA women’s soccer player Sophia Lowry, occurred outside the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Division qualifying event in Yorba Linda. This protest coincided with the participation of transgender athletes from Jurupa Valley High School.

“Our daughters are paying the price,” remarked California school superintendent candidate Sonya Shaw during her speech. “This is insane. Our girls are suffering. They are not safe. They are in danger at any competition or in the bathroom!”

In the lead-up to the event, the announcement concerning the protest led to a verbal conflict involving officials from Governor Newsom’s office and the White House. Following the protest’s announcement, Newsom’s office issued a statement emphasizing that discussions on the topic should focus on fairness, decency, and respect. The statement rejected what it described as the right’s cynical attempts to use these discussions to belittle children. “We stand with all children and stand up to bullies,” the message continued.

California, as noted, is one of 22 states with laws mandating that students can participate in single-sex sports based on their gender identity, a law enacted in 2013 (AB 1266) and signed by former Governor Jerry Brown.

A White House press secretary later accused dissenting governors of defying President Trump’s directives to stop biological transgender males from competing in women’s sports. White House Press Secretary Alison Schuster stated, “Gavin Newsom is a truly sick individual who has no regard for fairness, dignity, or respect. If he did, he would deny men access to women’s sports, limit opportunities for women, and jeopardize health and safety. President Trump is fighting for common-sense policies that uplift all athletes and restore equity on the field.”

Last year, a similar protest led to significant chaos at the California women’s track and field state finals, marked by multiple demonstrations and significant media attention. A transgender activist was arrested under allegations of attacking conservative protesters, and there were reports of a plane flying overhead with a “Save Women’s Sports” banner.

In July, the Trump administration’s Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California officials, citing violations of Title IX after a transgender athlete from Jurupa achieved notable success in various events, placing first in both the triple jump and high jump, and second in the long jump.
