McCaffrey Shines as 49ers Defeat Falcons
Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers defense had a noteworthy performance this past Sunday night. McCaffrey, the standout running back, accumulated 201 total yards and scored two touchdowns in a 20-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Specifically, he rushed for 129 yards and completed seven catches for 72 yards. He initiated the scoring in the second quarter, putting San Francisco ahead 7-3. Later in the game, with just 2 minutes and 26 seconds remaining, his shove into the end zone felt like a decisive blow to Falcons supporters.
The night was frustrating for the Falcons. Michael Penix Jr. managed to complete 21 of 38 passes for 241 yards, with one touchdown; however, he was sacked twice and lost a fumble. After big wins against the Washington Commanders and the Buffalo Bills, a stronger offensive showing was anticipated, but that didn’t materialize against a weakened 49ers defense.
Despite the Falcons having nine drives, they only managed 19 first downs—all while going 5-of-11 on third downs and failing on both fourth down attempts. In contrast, the 49ers accounted for 324 yards of total offense while the Falcons achieved 292.
One bright spot for Atlanta was running back Bijan Robinson, who gained 40 rushing yards on 14 attempts, supplemented by six catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s quarterback Mac Jones filled in for Brock Purdy, ending the game with 152 passing yards and one interception.
In light of the injuries San Francisco has faced since Week 1, their victory boosted their record to 5-2, while the Falcons fell to 3-3.
