Broncos’ Sean Payton Reflects on Russell Wilson’s Struggles
Russell Wilson didn’t exactly find the revenge he might have sought during the latest game against the Broncos, and it seems that head coach Sean Payton feels a tinge of disappointment as well.
After the Broncos edged out the Giants on Sunday, Payton’s comments hinted at a less-than-flattering view of his former quarterback. Wilson spent just one season under Payton’s guidance in 2023, and their relationship was, well, complicated.
Following the thrilling 33-32 victory over the Giants, Payton spoke about the Giants’ quarterback situation. He commended rookie Jackson Dart while casting shade on Wilson, who had been starting for the Giants in the initial weeks of the season.
“They found a little bit of a spark with that quarterback,” he mentioned, pointing to Dart.
“I was chatting with [Giants owner] John Mara a while back about how we hoped for that change—it should’ve happened before this game,” he added.
This remark suggests that Payton perhaps envisioned Wilson taking the center position again by Week 7 this year.
After struggling with an 0-3 start while under Wilson’s helm, the Giants opted to make Dart their starting quarterback for Week 4.
In his sole season with the Broncos, Wilson faced numerous challenges, ultimately being benched for Jarrett Stidham with two games remaining in the season. Although he managed to throw for over 3,000 yards, with 26 touchdowns to 8 interceptions, the team found itself at a disappointing 7-8 record when he was replaced.
Following the season, Wilson was waived, leaving the Broncos with quite a hit to their salary cap—around $85 million—marking the end of their collaboration.
Since Dart took over in New York, he has infused new energy into the Giants, creating a sense of optimism moving forward.
During his debut, Dart impressed by throwing for 283 yards and three touchdowns, culminating in a last-minute winning touchdown to cap off the game with a score of 26-8. However, an interception in that game proved to be a turning point during the Broncos’ comeback attempt.
