Chip Roy labels Democrats a 'bankrupt party' following nationwide anti-Trump demonstrations

Government Shutdown Continues as Protests Erupt

Rep. Chip Roy from Texas spoke alongside Democrats at a House Republican leadership press conference, marking the 20th day of the government shutdown. This came as protests against President Trump, termed the “No Kings” rallies, gained momentum nationwide over the weekend.

Roy criticized the left for their support of these protests, suggesting they reflect poorly on a political party struggling to maintain relevancy. “This is, in my humble opinion, the death knell for a bankrupt party that is all too happy to shut down government,” he stated during a Monday news conference.

He joined House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris in what was intended to be a show of unity among Republicans. Roy pointed out, “No one disputes one obvious fact: It’s the Democrats who chose to defund the government. Can we at least prove that’s true?” He expressed frustration over what he sees as the Democrats’ responsibility for the current crisis.

Referencing the protests, Roy suggested that they were merely politically motivated. He emphasized that it was Democrats, not President Trump, who incited violence in the past and, in his view, are now endangering their own positions. “What are we really talking about? It was Democrats, not Trump, who burned down our cities and attacked police officers in 2020,” he remarked.

As the protests continued, Republican leaders sharply criticized figures like Sen. Chuck Schumer for their involvement. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged the Democrats to consider the Republican funding bill now that the demonstrations have subsided, urging, “Now that the Democrats have failed in their protests and propaganda, we can only hope they come to their senses, end this shutdown, and reopen the government this week.” He emphasized that both Republicans and the American public are waiting for action.

The House had previously passed a bill to maintain federal funding, but it has faced multiple rejections in the Senate, primarily from Democrats who oppose a deal that lacks an extension on crucial Obamacare subsidies set to expire soon. Currently, this government shutdown stands as the third longest in U.S. history.
