Potential Resolution to Government Shutdown on the Horizon
As the government shutdown nears its third week, there’s a sense among some Trump administration officials that Democrats might soon be ready to negotiate.
Kevin Hassett, the Chairman of the National Economic Council, hinted at the possibility of an end to the shutdown. In a chat with CNBC, he remarked, “I think Schumer’s closure will likely end this week.”
Hassett also mentioned, “Many of our friends in the Senate are saying that it was just a bad look for Democrats to open the government before the No Kings rally, and now that things are winding down this week, there is hope that soon moderate Democrats will step forward and give us open government.”
The No Kings rally had taken place on Saturday, featuring modest protests against the Trump administration. With that now behind them, Hassett argued that Democrats may be more inclined to engage in discussions.
He continued, “There are some cracks in Schumer’s armor, and I think it’s likely Schumer’s shutdown will end this week.”
The Democratic Party has also expressed optimism about restoring government functions, although not everything is settled just yet.
Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) recently commented, stating, “If they sit down and negotiate with us, we should be able to wrap this up this week,” during an interview on “Face the Nation.”
However, it’s still uncertain if this outlook will hold true this week. Some Democratic members have not publicly altered their demands, although a few moderates have aligned themselves with Republicans regarding a straightforward continuing resolution to reopen the government.
White House Press Secretary Khush Desai noted, “Secretary Hassett is one of the tens of millions of ordinary Americans who all want Senate Democrats to end the government shutdown and do the right thing. The American people deserve better than to be left behind while Democrats want to die on a hill offering free health care to illegal immigrants.”
