Update on Garrett Wilson's injury status after missing his first game with the Jets

Garrett Wilson Misses NFL Debut Due to Knee Injury

On Sunday, Garrett Wilson experienced the unusual situation of missing his very first NFL game, sidelined due to a knee injury he sustained in the previous week’s match against the Broncos.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn was non-committal about Wilson’s practice status for the week. “I really hope he can play, but, you know, understanding this type of injury, I can’t make any promises,” he remarked. “It’s tough for any player dealing with an injury. We want them all on the field, but ultimately, I’m not a medical professional. I rely on the doctors to guide what’s best for both him and the team moving forward.”

Without Wilson, the Jets’ offense clearly struggled on Sunday.

Wilson has been a key player, leading the Jets with 36 receptions for 395 yards and four touchdowns so far this season.

In his absence, the Jets brought in wide receivers Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, Tyler Johnson, and Arian Smith. Among them, Johnson stood out, leading the team with three catches for 60 yards.

This upcoming Sunday, the Jets are set to go against the Bengals and their star receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, though they might be missing their top cornerback, Sauce Gardner, who is in the concussion protocol. It’s not common for a player in his situation to avoid missing at least one game. Additionally, running back and kick returner Kene Wangwu also has a concussion, while defensive tackle Jay Tufre is dealing with a “mild” knee sprain. Running back Breece Hall had some trouble during Sunday’s game with an undisclosed issue, but Glenn commented, “I think he’ll be fine.” As for linebacker Quincy Williams, he’s eligible to return from injured reserve this week, but Glenn wasn’t willing to confirm that just yet.

On the brighter side, the Jets’ defense has been strong over the last couple of weeks, allowing just 13 points in each of their losses to the Broncos and Panthers. This follows a rocky start under new defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes.

“Anytime you change the plan, you hope for a seamless transition, but things don’t always unfold that way for various reasons,” Glenn noted. “However, as they find their rhythm and grasp the scheme that Wilkes has implemented, it seems like they’re building more confidence. They’re starting to really understand their roles and how they fit into the bigger picture. I believe that’s a key factor in our defense getting better, and I expect that trend to continue.”
