Trump rejects 'king' label during nationwide 'No Kings' democracy demonstrations

No Kings Protests Erupt Across the U.S.

President Trump and his administration downplayed the national “No Kings” protests that took place over the weekend, while Democrats expressed support for those advocating for democracy.

This recent wave of protests marks at least the second series of “No Kings” rallies in notable cities like Washington, D.C., New York City, and Los Angeles since Trump began his second term. Organizers have claimed that their goal is to challenge what they perceive as Trump’s authoritarian tactics.

In response, Trump and other Republicans have ridiculed the thousands who participated in the rallies, dismissing the very idea of being labeled a “king.” Trump asserted, “I’m not the king… I work hard to make my country great. That’s all. I’m never a king.”

The president further stated that the protests were not indicative of the broader public, referring to them as small and ineffective. “When you look at those people, they don’t represent the people of our country,” he remarked.

Interestingly, despite his aversion to the title “king,” the White House’s social media has featured images of Trump adorned with a crown, and he has shared AI-generated videos portraying him in a regal light.

Meanwhile, opinions varied among lawmakers about the significance of these protests. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer provided contrasting takes—Johnson viewed the protests as a stunt to create a distraction amid a government shutdown, while Schumer celebrated them as a vital expression of democratic values. He insisted, “There is no dictator in the United States, and we will not allow President Trump to continue to erode our democracy.”

Democrats highlighted the importance of these protests as a show of resistance against potential tyranny. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared a video of herself dismantling a plastic crown, echoing her memorable moment tearing up Trump’s State of the Union address back in 2020.

As protests rolled out across major urban centers, Sen. Adam Schiff stated, “We said ‘no’ to the King… millions of people have stood shoulder to shoulder to say our democracy is worth fighting for.” He shared pictures of his participation in the rallies, emphasizing the need to protect freedoms.

Additionally, Sen. Patty Murray emphasized the essence of democracy, insisting, “This is what democracy looks like… There is no king in America!”
