Former NFL player Doug Martin died while facing mental health challenges, according to his agent.

On Monday, representatives for Doug Martin, a former NFL player, issued a statement on behalf of his family to clarify the details surrounding his recent death. Brian Murphy, CEO of Athletes First, revealed that Martin had been struggling with mental health issues leading up to the incident that occurred while he was in police custody in California.

The retired running back passed away on Saturday, and his family had reached out to authorities for assistance due to Martin’s declining state. According to the statement, “Doug has been personally battling mental health issues that have had a significant impact on his personal and professional life.” Unfortunately, it seems he could not escape the grips of his mental illness.

His family emphasized that they were seeking help and that Doug had become disoriented and fled his home during the night. He entered a residence two doors down, which led to police involvement. Current investigations are ongoing regarding the events that transpired while he was in custody.

Oakland Police added more details in their own communication about what occurred. They reported that, before his death, Martin was involved in a break-in and, during the response, a brief struggle ensued while officers tried to control him. Tragically, he became unresponsive soon after being taken into custody. Paramedics attempted to provide medical assistance and transported him to a local hospital, where he later died.

Since the incident, the police have maintained contact with Martin’s family, and the investigation continues. His death was made public on Sunday, and he was just 36 years old.

During his career, Martin played for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders.
