House Republicans Optimistic About 2026 Midterms Amid Ongoing Shutdown

With the government shutdown in full swing, some House Republicans believe it could pose challenges for Democrats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Representative Randy Feenstra from Iowa expressed to Fox News Digital that once things settle down, people will likely question the reasons behind the shutdown and what Democrats stood to gain from it. He suggested that this situation could lead to a strong sentiment among voters, who might feel that the government’s partisan behavior is “shameful.”

Feenstra, who is gearing up to announce his run for governor of Iowa, has begun rallying support and launching the “Feenstra for Governor” website. Recently, he was among the majority of House Republicans who supported a funding bill on September 19 aimed at extending federal funding for an additional seven weeks. This continuing resolution is intended to provide Congress with more time to negotiate a longer-term spending agreement for fiscal year 2026.

However, negotiations appear to be stalled in the Senate. Breaking the filibuster requires at least some Democratic votes, and so far, while a few have sided with Republicans, more support is needed for a final vote on the bill. Democrats are advocating for the funding legislation to include crucial healthcare provisions, particularly related to the extension of Obamacare subsidies established during the pandemic, which are set to end soon.

Feenstra has commented on the internal dynamics within the Democratic party, hinting that some members may align with Senator Chuck Schumer’s position, while liberal progressives continue to push for increased spending—emphasizing their support for inclusive healthcare access.

“This could have serious consequences for Democrats in upcoming elections,” Feenstra remarked. In contrast, Democrats have rebutted the Republican claims about health care access for undocumented immigrants, proposing a countermeasure that removes certain healthcare provisions from Republican proposals.

Feenstra has criticized the Democrats’ suggestions, particularly one that seeks to cut funding intended for local hospitals, highlighting the potential negative impact of such changes. He noted a significant concern in rural Iowa about the healthcare support included in the GOP bill, which aims at safeguarding essential services for communities, especially in light of the risks posed by the shutdown.

Additionally, local Republicans are anxious about how this standoff might affect crucial farmer programs, underscoring the widespread anxiety within the rural Midwest as the shutdown continues.
