The Seattle Seahawks displayed an unexpected strength during their recent victory over the Houston Texans, and surprisingly, it wasn’t their star players leading the charge.
In a tense moment during the fourth quarter, receiver Jackson Smith-Njiba found himself in the thick of action after Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. intercepted a pass intended for AJ Varner. Smith-Njiba immediately switched to blocking but was met with a solid hit from Stingley as they careened toward the Texans’ sideline.
As the play unfolded, Smith-Njiba’s helmet was knocked off, and he was pushed back towards the bench. A crowd of Texans players gathered around him, prompting former NFL player and current referee Nate Jones to intervene. He stepped in between Smith-Njiba and the group, using his arms to create a barrier as the situation unfolded.
After the game, Smith-Njiba acknowledged Stingley’s impressive play while downplaying the sideline skirmish. He noted that despite being in the heat of the moment, he appreciated Jones’s quick action.
“We had a good chat,” Smith-Njiba said. “I took a deep breath and tried to enjoy the moment as best I could before heading back to the sideline.”
Jones, who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft, previously played as a cornerback for teams like the Dallas Cowboys before turning to officiating in 2019.
Smith-Njiba also played a key role in the game itself, achieving his fourth touchdown of the season, along with eight receptions for 123 yards, contributing significantly to the Seahawks’ 27-19 win.
