New York City’s Newest “Scream Queen”
There’s a certain thrill that comes with embracing the spooky and bizarre. I’ve always been drawn to haunted houses, folk horror films, and quirky finds from thrift shops. So, when the chance arose to join the freak show at Blood Manor—one of New York’s premier haunted attractions—I couldn’t turn it down.
This yearly Halloween spectacle, which has been around since 2003, attracts countless thrill-seekers willing to dive into a maze filled with more than 30 live performers, animatronics, and eerie special effects. Many even claim to experience real-life frights.
Over the years, whispers of apparitions and ghostly sounds have surrounded Blood Manor, with many agreeing that it’s one of the most vibrant spots in Tribeca. “The building itself is haunted without us,” shared Jim Lorenzo, the owner. “This is where New Yorkers come to scream, laugh, and just be themselves.”
Getting Ready to Scare
On an October evening, I transformed into one of Blood Manor’s chilling ghouls, swapping my press pass for fangs, eerie black fingers, and a blood-spattered outfit. A quick tour through the basement, rich with haunted tales, led me to the make-up room where the atmosphere was charged with rock music and anticipation.
My role was to frighten visitors in a particularly twisted section called “The Cult of the Spider.” Ironically, I have a deep-seated fear of spiders. But, when Blood Manor’s makeup artist suggested I become a “spider siren,” a character that lures the unsuspecting to their doom, I figured it was time to conquer my fears.
Getting my makeup done was transformative. My face transformed with eerie shades, while glowing painted eyes crept across my skin, giving me an unsettling yet captivating look. The finishing touches—my nails styled in a drippy red-to-black gradient—completed the illusion.
A Room that Screams “Boo!”
The space assigned to me was nothing short of wild: filled with crosses, tombstones, skeletons, and intricate decorations that gave it a haunted temple vibe. Equal parts creepy and enchanting, it perfectly captured the atmosphere I crave.
Before any visitors arrived, a young actress named Sianna shared her tips on how to mimic a huntsman spider. Amy Upham, who conceptualized the room, inspired me further, emphasizing the thrill of pouncing on unsuspecting guests. “They’re flies now, and we’re hungry,” she declared.
I readied myself with a choice of props, naturally opting for a machete. As guests entered, I would spring out from the shadows, beckoning them to meet the spider goddess.
Jim Lorenzo had once advised me, “Never say the word ‘boo’ and always put your all into the scare.” I took that to heart.
A Fright to Remember
As guests made their way into my territory, a chilling atmosphere filled the air. Armed with my machete, I positioned myself, mimicking iconic horror characters like Regan from *The Exorcist*. Their reactions ranged from gasps to delighted screams, which, honestly, made me want to continue doing this every Halloween.
“Spider Goddess, you’re perfect for her,” one visitor said, while others exclaimed, “No thanks!” Some seemed tempted and stepped back cautiously, letting my fellow actors step in with their own scares.
Meanwhile, another actress moved with creepy grace around the room, heightening the suspense. I tried to emulate her, though I hadn’t quite mastered the spider-walk yet. A final attempt at fright found me hiding behind a tombstone to catch the guests off-guard.
The excitement was contagious as they gasped and shrieked. Over two intense hours, I recorded their reactions using a GoPro, feeling delightfully mischievous.
Unexpected Reactions After Blood Manor
Still buzzing with energy, I didn’t wash off the spider makeup as I made my way home. On the train, I was surprised by how many people approached me for selfies or chatted about my look, their reactions ranging from amused to astonished.
By the time I reached my neighborhood, I felt oddly included, even with my over-the-top appearance. A woman complimented my makeup as she walked by, and it felt oddly rewarding.
So, sure, I might still get creeped out by spiders, but now, I can channel that energy and scare a few people myself!
Blood Manor is located at 359 Broadway and will be open from October 23rd to 26th, October 28th to November 2nd, and on the weekends of November 7th and 8th.
Tickets start at $50 for general admission, or you can opt for an express entry at $70.
If you’re curious about stepping into a horror actor’s role like I did, it will be on offer again this year for $350.
