Brian Koberger’s Attorneys Request Release from Restitution Payments

Lawyers representing Brian Koberger, who was convicted for the murders of four University of Idaho students, are seeking to have him released from certain financial obligations. Koberger, a 30-year-old former criminology graduate student, faces nearly $27,000 in payments to two families of the victims. His attorneys contend that sufficient funds have already been raised via GoFundMe campaigns, covering these expenses.

According to a plea agreement, Koberger has agreed to pay over $250,000 in fines and fees to the families of Kaylee Gonsalves, Madison Morgen, Zana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Additionally, there are civil judgments amounting to $20,000 for each family.

The defense argues it wouldn’t be fair to impose nearly $20,000 in extra expenses on Gonsalves’ parents or $7,000 on Morgen’s mother for travel costs asserted by prosecutors.

Koberger’s Prison Transfer

Koberger is currently serving four consecutive life sentences plus a decade, having pleaded guilty to the murders to avoid the death penalty, which he has maintained he was not guilty of for more than two years.

In court documents, Koberger’s lawyers noted that the extra funds requested do not represent an economic loss under Idaho law, since the families involved received significant contributions through multiple fundraising efforts. For instance, campaigns funded $73,493 for Gonsalves and Morgen, and $48,815 to help Laramie attend the proceedings in person. Another sum of $85,583 was raised for Gonsalves and her family for similar reasons.

With Koberger’s current sentencing, his legal team states he has no ability to pay restitution now or in the future, complicating the matter further.

Koberger’s case has drawn considerable media attention, highlighting not just the tragic events but also the financial aftermath for the victims’ families. It seems there’s a mix of legal maneuvering in a situation that many would think should be straightforward.
