Ireland Baldwin Reflects on Childhood as She Turns 30

As Ireland Baldwin marks her 30th birthday, she reflects on a “lonely childhood” that played a significant role in shaping her identity. Writing on Substack, she shared her thoughts in a blog post titled “30, Cheating, and Surviving,” where she revisits difficult moments from her past and discusses how she distanced herself from her “narcissistic” family.

In her message, Ireland described her upbringing, noting, “I grew up with no parents at home and no siblings to rely on.” She added that turning 30 feels like a relief, saying, “A lot of weight is lifted off your shoulders,” a weight that stemmed from the emotional burden of an “untrustworthy, addicted family member.” It’s a poignant realization for her, and she expresses a commitment to breaking those negative cycles for her own child.

“I had a sometimes lonely childhood. So I grew up feeling like I needed to win over certain people in my family,” she mentioned. The realization of her family’s toxicity was liberating; she aims to provide her daughter, who is two years old, with a healthier notion of family.

Iceland’s parents, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, married in 1993 and separated five years later, finalizing their divorce in 2002. Despite the challenges, Ireland said the last decade has brought both joy and significant pain.

She reflected on her years, illustrating her struggle with identity. “I wasted so much time pretending to be someone else. I would do anything to get that time back,” she wrote, emphasizing the importance of being authentic. The road to understanding, she notes, is bumpy—”You can’t change or fix people,” she urged, advising others to quit while they can.

Iceland also shared insights about appreciating relationships, like urging readers to express love to their mothers daily, as it brings deeper understanding over time. Furthermore, she acknowledged her own body image issues with a repetition that seems both humorous and relatable.

In another noteworthy moment, Ireland discussed her relationship with her stepmother, Hilaria Baldwin, calling her “bat-crazy,” yet she credits Hilaria with saving her father’s life by encouraging him towards kindness and self-acceptance. “Thanks to Hilaria, I was able to have the close relationship I have with my father. I met her when I was a teenager, and I needed her as an example,” she expressed appreciatively.

Ultimately, Ireland hopes to carve a space for herself in the next decade. “I cannot speak for the vast and ever-changing world around me. All I can do is focus on my own path,” she stated, as she aims to build her own community and surround herself with supportive people.
