NYPD Boosts Recruitment Efforts Amid Officer Shortage

The NYPD is escalating its recruitment initiatives with a new campaign tied to this year’s “Back the Blue” ceremony, aiming to increase public engagement and support.

In recent years, the police department in New York City has experienced a significant decline, losing over 14,000 officers since 2020. This year alone, nearly 3,500 are expected to leave. Interestingly, only about 8,000 individuals have expressed interest in joining the force this year, a sharp drop from 18,000 applicants in 2017, according to officials.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned on Tuesday that there’s a plan to rebuild the ranks, with the aim of reaching 35,000 uniformed officers by next year. Yet, it seems like they could use just a bit more momentum to restore full staffing levels.

Back in 2019, the department had around 36,000 uniformed officers.

“We are facing a talent shortage crisis, but let’s be clear: we’re in the middle of a significant rebuilding phase,” Tisch explained. She added that projections for January 2026 suggest higher employee numbers compared to this year, and the current momentum is quite noticeable. “This isn’t merely a number; it symbolizes renewal.”

“We are revitalizing our ranks. Our goal is to enhance the NYPD’s presence and reassure the city’s residents that we are foundational to New York,” she stated.

This year’s Back the Blue fundraiser will incorporate advertising efforts specifically designed to attract more individuals. The National Law Enforcement Foundation plans to unveil new ad spots for the NYPD.

John Catsimatidis, a notable supermarket owner and radio host, is investing over $1 million in recruitment advertisements, according to Tisch. “John and Margo’s continued support for the NYPD is remarkable. Their contributions will significantly bolster our recruiting efforts, helping us reach potential candidates who aspire to serve and encouraging pride in the uniform. This could not come at a more critical time,” she emphasized.

Tisch reported that the department has onboarded nearly 3,000 new officers since November—the highest number in two decades—and over 2,200 have graduated from the police academy. Another class is set to commence before the end of the year.

The department is on track to surpass its historical record of 3,231 hires from 1984.

With the number of officers in the city dwindling, especially in recent years, police departments have started to relax traditional requirements, such as educational qualifications, to attract more applicants.

Last year, reports indicated that an average of 200 officers were retiring each month.

“It’s crucial to realize that without public safety in New York City, our advancement nationwide is hindered. Discussions about improved housing and affordability can only go so far,” remarked Michael Supply-Corn, a former NYPD officer and ex-Senate candidate, during the ceremony on Tuesday. “Supporting Back the Blue is essential; public safety is fundamental for progress in our streets.”
