Trump’s Stance on Meeting Putin
A White House official informed the Daily Caller News Foundation that President Donald Trump currently has “no plans” to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This revelation came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a “fruitful” phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Initially, the conversation between Rubio and Lavrov was over the phone. However, on October 16, Rubio expressed willingness to meet Putin at a summit in Budapest, Hungary. This visit will mark Putin’s first trip to a European Union member country since attending a summit in Germany prior to the invasion of Ukraine.
The official stated, “Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Lavrov had a meaningful meeting. Therefore, there is no need for additional direct meetings between the Secretary and Foreign Minister.”
Recently, President Trump had a brief discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy about Ukraine’s security situation and peace possibilities with Russia. During their conversation, Zelenskiy mentioned an agreement where the U.S. would provide thousands of Ukrainian-made drones in exchange for Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles.
The U.S. is stepping up pressure on Russia to engage in peace talks after earlier attempts in August showed no significant progress. Notably, India has also agreed to U.S. requests to halt its purchases of Russian crude oil.
Meanwhile, the conflict has remained largely stagnant since Russia failed to capture Kiev during its initial offensive in 2022. Ukraine has maintained its position without conceding any territory as peace negotiations unfold.
In light of the ongoing situation, President Trump and various European leaders have emphasized that the current battle lines should serve as a foundation for peace discussions.
