Netflix Stock Takes a Hit Post Q3 Results
Netflix’s stock dropped 7% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after the company released its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday evening.
The disappointing results were partly linked to an ongoing $600 million dispute with Brazilian tax authorities. This decline in stock value aligns with the growing backlash from audiences regarding the transgender content the platform has been promoting for children.
In an unexpected turn, Netflix’s latest earnings broke a streak of six consecutive quarters where profits exceeded analysts’ forecasts, despite a more sluggish growth in its advertising sector. While the company did report a profit, it fell short of what was anticipated.
The firm indicated that a surprise $619 million expense from the Brazilian tax issue contributed to the revenue shortfall. However, they acknowledged that a strong lineup of original shows and movies, coupled with rising subscription and advertising sales, helped align their revenue with analyst predictions.
This financial announcement came in the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery hinting at potential sales of parts of its operations, including HBO and DC Studios. There is speculation that Netflix might be interested in acquiring a stake in the production company.
As reported, Netflix is facing criticism for its children’s programming, particularly concerning its approach to artificial intelligence. Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett has voiced concerns about what he describes as “satanic” themes in the platform’s kids’ shows.
Burchett and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) have called for Netflix executives to explain the presence of transgender characters in children’s titles, particularly referring to the cartoon series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which targets children under 13.
“We need to bring them in for questioning to understand their intentions regarding this content,” Burchett stated. He emphasized, “If they don’t respond willingly, we may have to summon them, as this is a serious issue impacting the mental well-being of young viewers and reflecting on societal morals.”
It’s worth noting that Dead End isn’t the only Netflix children’s series featuring LGBTQI+ characters. Titles like Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, The Baby-Sitters Club, Monster High, and Transformers: Earth Spark have also been noted for promoting progressive themes.
Burchett is particularly interested in understanding the controls Netflix has in place for parental guidance on its content.
