Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Addresses Text Scandal

In a recent interview, Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger downplayed a texting scandal involving congressman Jay Jones, describing it as a “bad choice.” This incident dates back to 2022, when Jones sent a contentious message to his colleagues, expressing wishes for violence against former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his family, which understandably ignited outrage among Republicans and left some Democrats feeling uneasy.

While some party members are urging Jones to step back from the election, Spanberger seems to be in his corner, as her campaign website still promotes merchandise supporting his candidacy. It’s a complicated situation; the political landscape is anything but stable, and Spanberger has had to maneuver through this turmoil carefully.

Spanberger discussed the issue during an interview with WTVR CBS 6 host Bill Fitzgerald, who pointed out the potential distraction this scandal might pose. Fitzgerald raised the question of whether Spanberger was satisfied with Jones’s apology for the threatening message he sent.

“I want to start by unequivocally condemning the emails he sent to his colleagues,” she stated. “As soon as I learned about them, I condemned them and called on Jay Jones to publicly explain himself. I think he very clearly apologized and took responsibility for that poor choice.”

As she reflected on the recent attorney general debate in Virginia, Spanberger emphasized how crucial it is for voters to engage. “The significant thing is that there are hundreds of thousands of Virginians voting right now. That debate was an important discussion that highlighted the differences between candidates, helping voters make informed decisions on who best represents their interests.”
