Jets’ Quarterback Situation Sparks Debate

The owner of the Jets has clearly expressed his thoughts on Justin Fields and the team’s quarterback dilemma.

In response, the head coach has opted for a vague stance about who will lead the offense in Week 8.

Aaron Glenn mentioned that he knows who will be starting for the Jets on Sunday in Cincinnati, yet he refrained from revealing if it will be Tyrod Taylor or Justin Fields, who faced criticism from Woody Johnson just a day earlier.

“He has the right to say what he said,” Glenn remarked during a Jets practice, indirectly hinting at the team’s struggles contributing to Fields’ winless record.

Despite the comments from Johnson, Glenn maintains that the choice of quarterback should be his. Throughout the season, he had backed Fields until Taylor stepped in during the second half of Sunday’s defeat against the Panthers.

It’s true that there’s a lot of data and tough commentary that might favor Taylor this weekend, but Glenn hopes the uncertainty around the starting position will be beneficial to the team—especially since Taylor’s status is uncertain due to a knee issue.

“I don’t want to give Cincinnati any edge,” Glenn said, pushing back against Johnson’s notion that Fields was responsible for the team’s poor performance.

In his first season with the Jets, Fields has shown limited progress, sitting at the bottom of the NFL in passing yards and struggling for consecutive games without a touchdown.

However, Glenn argued that several factors have hampered the Jets, including a defense that “didn’t perform well early” and a running game that “needed to play more effectively.”

The way Glenn distributed the blame contrasted sharply with Johnson’s comments made at a fall owners meeting. Johnson emphasized the importance of completing passes, stating that without that, it’s challenging to win any games. “If you can’t pass, you can’t run. That’s just basic football,” he stated.
