Major Crime Crackdown in Memphis

Law enforcement in Memphis, Tennessee, recently apprehended over 1,000 individuals and located several missing children as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative aimed at reducing crime in this notorious city. This information surfaced on Wednesday, revealing a concerted effort by both federal and local officers.

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the ongoing operation, stating, “Our dedicated federal officers and local authorities are doing an incredible job protecting the good people of Memphis.” She emphasized that accepting crime is a choice and reiterated the commitment to safeguard the community under Trump’s leadership.

Since the operation launched in September, officials reported a staggering 1,309 arrests, which include serious offenses like murder and sex crimes, along with numerous other violations.

Memphis has consistently been among the most dangerous cities in the U.S., with a murder rate of 40.6 per 100,000 people recorded in 2024.

On September 15, President Trump authorized the formation of the Memphis Safety Task Force and deployed the National Guard to the area. This initiative is backed by Republican Governor Bill Lee, who noted that the current efforts to combat crime could extend indefinitely as federal support continues to intensify.

“We know this situation will last for several months, but it’s just the beginning,” Lee commented, suggesting that these measures might remain in place for a long time.

Recent operations yielded the recovery of 72 missing children and the confiscation of 247 firearms. Notably, 109 gang members, tied to various groups, were arrested during the efforts.

On the night of October 21, law enforcement arrested several individuals, including those wanted for severe crimes such as aggravated rape of a child and gang-related offenses.

National Guard troops have been present in Memphis since September, working alongside other officials to enhance community safety. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to address escalating crime rates in the city.

Local officials, particularly Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen, have expressed strong opposition to the intervention, insisting that residents should not be treated as adversaries and deserve their constitutional rights. He remarked that “Memphians are not the enemy” and called the government’s actions alarming.

This crackdown reflects a wider campaign by the Trump administration to combat rising crime across the nation, including a previous effort to federalize police departments in other cities, such as Washington, D.C. Despite facing legal challenges, there’s a clear aim to tackle crime trends that have emerged, especially since 2020.

Reflecting on the situation, Trump noted, “Memphis is in a lot of trouble.” He assured that, like previous initiatives in Washington, there is hope for significant improvements.
