Mamdani and Cuomo Both Claim Seriously That Supporting One Means Supporting Trump

Candidates Clash in NYC Mayoral Debate

During a debate on Wednesday night, Zoran Mamdani, the socialist Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, a former Democratic governor, exchanged heated accusations. Each claimed the other would support President Donald Trump.

This was the second and last debate for the candidates, where they discussed policies and their visions for leading the city’s future. Mamdani labeled Cuomo as Trump’s “puppet” and asserted that the former governor was the president’s preferred choice for mayor.

“We heard first from the Republican candidate,” Mamdani stated, referring to Curtis Sliwa, and continued with his strong criticism of Cuomo. “Whenever you turn on the TV, you’ll hear Donald Trump say he chose Andrew Cuomo as his mayoral candidate. He wants Cuomo in charge, not for the benefit of New Yorkers, but for his own interests,” Mamdani said.

He highlighted Trump’s track record on issues such as mass deportations and the rising cost of living, emphasizing that he would work against Trump on those fronts, though he seemed open to discussing cost of living matters with the president. “I’d fight Trump every step of the way,” he added.

When given a chance to respond to Mamdani’s comments about his support for Trump, Cuomo promptly pushed back, stating, “That’s not what Donald Trump said.” He posited that Trump prefers Mamdani as a political tool and suggested that Trump aims to exert control over New York City.

Cuomo elaborated, indicating that the challenge lies in choosing between being a Democrat or a communist, mentioning that Trump sees Mamdani as a communist despite him identifying as a socialist.

Since Mamdani defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary last June, polls have favored him as he approaches the general election on November 4. Trump has expressed concern over Mamdani’s proposed policies for the city during a Fox News interview.

Recently, Trump expressed skepticism about Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s chances in the race, indicating it doesn’t look promising for Cuomo either. However, he hinted that Cuomo might still have a slight advantage if Sliwa were to withdraw.

As the election day draws near, a recent poll indicated Mamdani leads with a 49% approval rating, with Cuomo at 28% and Sliwa at 13%. The landscape of the race is shifting, and political dynamics are evolving rapidly as the candidates approach the final stretch.
