Accident Involving Immigrant Truck Driver Causes Tragedy
A 21-year-old man from India, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022, is now facing serious charges following a tragic semi-truck crash that resulted in three fatalities in Southern California, according to reports from federal law enforcement officials.
The individual, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, was initially intercepted by Border Patrol agents in El Centro, California, back in March 2022. After this encounter, he was released pending an immigration review.
Singh has been arrested on charges of gross negligent driving while under the influence after he crashed his truck into slower moving vehicles on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County. This horrific accident, caught on dashcam video, not only claimed lives but also left several others injured.
Authorities indicated that toxicology results showed Singh was impaired at the time, and notably, he didn’t apply the brakes before colliding with traffic.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed Singh’s lack of legal immigration status, and ICE has filed a complaint following his arrest.
Singh had been released under the Biden administration’s 2022 Alternatives to Detention Policy, a situation echoed in other cases where undocumented immigrants have been implicated in crimes while awaiting legal proceedings.
This incident adds to a troubling trend involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in the U.S. For instance, Harjinder Singh, who crossed the border unlawfully in 2018 and holds a commercial driver’s license in California, was recently charged in a crash that killed three individuals in Fort Pierce, Florida, last August. Investigators have indicated that he had not passed a basic English and road sign test.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the broader issue of language requirements for truck drivers in a statement on October 15. He highlighted the challenges of non-compliance among states regarding English proficiency standards. “I warned states that failing to enforce these standards could result in losing federal funding,” he stated. “California stands out as the only state neglecting to ensure that truck drivers can understand road signs and communicate effectively with law enforcement, posing a fundamental safety concern for everyone on the road.”
This incident comes on the heels of the Trump administration’s recent decision to withhold over $40 million in federal highway safety funds from California due to non-compliance with these language standards.
The White House has yet to respond to requests for further comment regarding this matter.
