Darren Bailey grieves for his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren following the Montana helicopter accident.

The Republican candidate for governor in Illinois, Darren Bailey, is mourning the tragic loss of his son, daughter-in-law, and two young grandchildren following a helicopter crash.

Bailey, 59, confirmed the distressing news that his son Zachary, his daughter-in-law Kelsey, and their two children died in the accident late Wednesday in Montana.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Notably, Bailey’s 10-year-old grandson, Finn, was not on the helicopter.

In a statement from Bailey’s campaign, it was expressed that he and his wife, Cindy, are “heartbroken by this unimaginable loss.” They are seeking solace in their faith, family, and the community’s prayers during this tough time.

The couple appreciates the outpouring of kindness and support but has requested privacy as they navigate their grief and surround themselves with loved ones.

Formerly an Illinois state senator, Bailey is set to run against incumbent Governor JB Pritzker again in the upcoming 2026 election.

Pritzker offered his condolences, stating, “MK and I are devastated to learn about the tragic passing of Darren and Cindy Bailey’s son Zachary, daughter-in-law Kelsey, and their two young children, Vada Rose and Samuel.” He extended his prayers and deepest sympathies to the Bailey family, hoping that the memories of their loved ones will be a source of comfort.
