Wembanyama Shines in Season Opener
Victor Wembanyama had a standout moment during a postgame interview with ESPN after the Spurs kicked off their season with a 125-92 victory over the Mavericks. He couldn’t hold back his excitement, saying, “This is what we are working for. We all have our own battles and struggles… God knows, I worked hard this summer, and, you know, now all my dreams are forgiven. I’m just so happy to be back because after everything I’ve been through, it really means something.”
Wembanyama scored an impressive 40 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in this game, marking a triumphant return after missing the last three months of the previous season due to a shoulder blood clot.
This performance has certainly elevated expectations for the 21-year-old as he embarks on his third season with the Spurs. “I needed to make a statement in the locker room. I felt I needed to make a statement to my teammates,” he reflected. “This is just the beginning because there are still a lot of things I want to add to my game. Some things take time and maturity.”
The Spurs have made quite the roster with the past two Rookie of the Year winners in Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, along with seasoned players like De’Aaron Fox, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue. They also welcomed Rutgers standout Dylan Harper, the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, who scored 15 points in his debut.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson noted, “I think we all knew he was going to be aggressive. He’s been out for eight months and probably has been waiting for this moment longer than anyone else. It was great to see him seize the moment and play so well.”
On the flip side, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg had a rough start in his first NBA game with the Mavericks, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but being outscored by 29 points during his time on the court.
