Former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels recently urged Republicans in Indiana to resist pressure from President Trump regarding redistricting congressional maps in favor of the party.
In his thoughts shared through an editorial, Daniels noted that Indiana has become a focal point for the Republican Party’s national strategy aimed at maintaining control of the House of Representatives. While he agrees with the goal, he expressed strong disapproval of the methods being used, hoping the state’s leaders will choose not to comply.
Interestingly, the Indiana Senate Republicans currently lack the votes necessary to alter the congressional map. Recent reports indicate that five senators are in favor, three are against, and the remaining forty are either undecided or have not publicly taken a stance.
Daniels emphasized the need for Indiana Republicans to resist pressure from the White House. He supports the intended outcome, though he disagrees with the tactics proposed to achieve it. He even characterized the pressure as an empty threat that should be challenged.
Despite the Republican majority in the state, Daniels pointed out that “no amount of artistic delineation” could successfully transform the 1st Congressional District into a Republican stronghold.
He expressed confidence that even if the redistricting effort fails, it would provoke public discontent, noting that Hoosiers, like many Americans, value fairness and typically respond negatively to overt injustices.
This redistricting initiative appears to follow recent Republican successes in states like Texas and North Carolina, with Democrats eyeing a similar strategy in California.
In closing, Daniels acknowledged the significant pressures faced by Indiana’s leaders but urged them to prioritize their duty to the people over national political interests. He noted that doing the right thing would ultimately be beneficial in itself.
