AJ McCarron Announces Run for Alabama Lieutenant Governor

AJ McCarron, the former quarterback for the University of Alabama who led the team to consecutive national championships, stated on Thursday that he is entering the race as a Republican for the position of lieutenant governor in 2026.

The 35-year-old from Alabama mentioned that one significant factor influencing his decision was the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, which occurred on September 10. He reflected on how his NFL experience emphasized the importance of pursuing goals greater than oneself.

In his announcement video, McCarron expressed, “Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from all directions. That’s why Charlie Kirk’s assassination affected so many of us so deeply. His example convinced me to come off the sidelines, get into the game, and stand tall for our conservative beliefs. So today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.”

He added, “Montgomery insiders and career politicians had a chance. It’s time for political newcomers and outside candidates like me to lead the fight.”

McCarron holds the record for the most passing yards at Alabama and secured national championships in 2012 and 2013. He was also a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2013.

Initially drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he continued his professional football career across various leagues, including the NFL and XFL, until 2024.

Other individuals in the running for the 2026 lieutenant governor position include Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen and Cullman County Assistant Bishop Patrick Bishop, among others.

Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville had announced in May his intention to run for governor, having previously served as the head football coach at Auburn University, a rival to the University of Alabama.
