Former CNN Analyst Cautions That Jasmine Crockett Might Give Texas Senate Seat To GOP

Political Analyst Warns of Potential GOP Advantage in Texas Senate Race

On his YouTube channel, political contributor Chris Sillizza cautioned that Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett’s potential Senate campaign might inadvertently benefit Republicans.

Crockett mentioned on SiriusXM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show” that she is contemplating a Senate bid for the 2026 midterm elections. Sillizza remarked in a video that other Democratic candidates could present a stronger challenge against Republican contenders.

“The challenge is that I find it hard to envision how Mr. Crockett can connect with centrists, especially in Texas, where Democrats are few and far between. Even rallying the entire Democratic base might not be enough for a win,” Sillizza explained. “This scenario could be quite appealing for Republicans, particularly if Ken Paxton manages to secure a primary win over John Cornyn and Wesley Hunt. If that happens, Jasmine Crockett could be the Democrats’ best chance to keep the seat for Republicans.”

“In my view, there is no doubt that either Colin Allred or James Talarico—or even Beto O’Rourke—would be stronger candidates in the general election against Paxton, Cornyn, and Hunt compared to Jasmine Crockett,” he added.

Sillizza speculated that Crockett might ultimately bow out of the race, noting that while the campaign could help her fundraising efforts, polls indicate she lacks significant support.

“That possibility might make Democrats nationwide anxious,” he noted. “I’m not convinced she’s the right choice, and what’s more concerning for national Democrats is that it may be challenging to steer Jasmine Crockett away from running. If she decides to run, she could quite possibly secure the Democratic nomination.”

Crockett, in her Wednesday comments, highlighted recent polling, claiming she stands a good chance against existing Democratic primary opponents.

She reportedly leads in hypothetical primary scenarios, garnering 31% of the vote among likely Democratic voters, according to polls conducted by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University.

State Rep. James Talarico and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke each received 25% support, while Colin Allred, who previously lost to Republican Senator Ted Cruz, garnered just 13%.

O’Rourke has yet to make a decision about running but has expressed willingness to support Crockett’s bid should he choose not to enter the race.

A July poll by the National Republican Senatorial Committee indicated that Crockett held a significant lead in the Democratic primary, achieving 35% against Allred’s 20%.

“Winning in Texas hinges on expanding the electorate rather than solely appealing to the existing one,” Crockett stated on Wednesday. “If I can broaden my base, I will seriously contemplate entering the Senate race.”

Crockett has gained notoriety for her controversial remarks and confrontational comments toward Republicans, such as when she referred to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, as “Governor Hot Wheels” back in March.
