James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate, is promoting values that many traditional Texans might find unappealing. A recent trip to a taco shop in Austin, however, has raised more eyebrows among Texas voters.
Talarico teamed up with former President Barack Obama to support his Senate campaign. They visited a taco place near the University of Texas, where it’s reported that Talarico is a familiar face, with staff already knowing his usual order. During this outing, Obama ordered a taco platter, while Talarico claimed he opted for a potato, egg, and cheese taco.
The taco shop has a variety of meat options, like grilled sirloin and beef fajitas. I mean, really? In Texas, going for a potato taco can seem almost heretical.
Interestingly, Talarico hasn’t outright claimed to be vegan or vegetarian, but his team posted a picture of him enjoying a turkey leg at a state fair, trying to counter harsh allegations about his diet. He’s even stated that his “campaign is basically a barbecue.”
So, what’s going on with his choice of taco? Why would someone, who, let’s say, looks like they could use a bit more protein, choose potatoes and eggs over the meaty options? It feels off for any Texan.
While Talarico is no rookie to politics, he seems to misjudge the vibe of the average Texan by promoting this order. His support for gun control, radical abortion policies, and climate change initiatives positions him as a controversial figure.
Some might consider allowing specific dietary choices during Lent, but when meat options are readily available, embracing a vegetarian choice seems misplaced, especially given the state’s culture.
