During a recent interview on Fox News, Stephen Miller, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, took aim at actor Robert De Niro, making light of the acclaimed performer’s career.
Miller, appearing on “Hannity,” characterized the veteran of films like “The Godfather Part II” as “a sad, bitter, broken old man.” He commented that De Niro hasn’t starred in a noteworthy film in at least three decades, suggesting that the actor’s career has been a series of disappointments.
“This is probably the longest series of failures and embarrassments ever,” Miller remarked. He further stated that De Niro’s adult life seems to have been spent degrading himself through a string of poor roles, leaving him without serious credibility among his peers or family. “He is an empty shell, and everyone ignores what he has to say,” Miller added.
The host, Sean Hannity, brought up De Niro’s recent comments, where the actor likened Miller to Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda chief for Adolf Hitler, labeling him a Nazi. De Niro had also expressed support for New York Attorney General Letitia James, criticizing former President Trump in the process.
“I love what Letitia James is doing. She’s pushing back and saying, ‘You’re wrong,’” De Niro said, prompting noticeable reactions from those listening. “This is it. I won’t be fooled by this man. I’m not afraid of him. And God bless her.”
De Niro referenced Miller directly, calling him “Goebbels” while commenting on Trump’s unwillingness to step down after a potential second term. He conveyed a sense of disdain for the former president, suggesting he lacks empathy.
“We don’t know where he is or who he is, but he’s an alien and he wants to damage this country,” De Niro criticized. “There’s something inside him that seeks to harm others and he doesn’t care.”
De Niro has been vocal in his criticism of Trump since the latter’s first term, even making headlines during past interviews. In a notable conversation from September 2019 with then-CNN’s Brian Stelter, the actor faced backlash from Fox News figures.
“Damn them,” De Niro reacted, pushing back against their criticisms. When Stelter inquired about De Niro’s choice to take such a stance, the actor replied, “This man has turned into something of a gangster in this country. Over and over, we say, ‘This is terrible.’ But he just keeps moving forward, without stopping.”
