Mamdani: Trump is targeting James for doing the right thing

Political Tensions in New York

During a rally in lower Manhattan on Thursday, Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani criticized President Trump for targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“Donald Trump is pursuing her because she did what was right,” Mamdani stated. “She held him accountable. No one, no one who dreams of being above the law should escape it.”

He labeled the current administration as authoritarian, arguing that “we, the people, will not endorse it.” He further emphasized rejecting Trump’s vision, filled with “cruelty, punishment, pettiness, and betrayal” while promoting a hopeful vision focused on unity, particularly in support of James.

James, described by Mamdani as “one of the state’s greatest defenders,” recently pleaded not guilty to two federal charges linked to alleged mortgage fraud. Her indictment by the Trump administration happened earlier this month.

After her court appearance, James condemned Trump’s actions, asserting they manifest a “judicial system weaponized for revenge.” Concerns have been rising over the administration’s pattern of filing charges against political opponents, including former FBI Director James Comey and former national security adviser John Bolton.

In 2022, James had already initiated a civil fraud case against Trump, claiming he had inflated his net worth for tax and insurance benefits. A New York judge found him liable for fraud, resulting in fines that began at $354.8 million, eventually surpassing $500 million due to interest. While the Court of Appeals reduced the fine in August, the case remains active. Both Trump and James have filed appeals.

At the rally, Mamdani reiterated his backing for James amid the ongoing charges. “We trust she will remain steadfast, representing the citizens of the city, state, and country in this fight,” he affirmed. “And we will stand by her side.”
