Earlier this month, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was traded from the Cleveland Browns to their in-state rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals. As part of the deal, Cincinnati obtained Flacco alongside a sixth-round draft pick for next year, while Cleveland received a fifth-round pick.
Since the trade, Flacco has suited up for only two games with the Bengals. Adjusting to life in Cincinnati hasn’t been easy, especially since his family—his wife Dana and their five children—remains in New Jersey.
On Wednesday, Flacco shared some insights into how he’s coping with the transition. “For me, I’m just trying to stay here a little bit longer and find a way to free myself from that thought and go home,” he mentioned. Dining alone has become a new experience for him. He reflects, “I always saw guys sitting alone at bars or restaurants and felt sorry for them. But now I’m realizing they might just be enjoying some peace.” It’s a different perspective for sure.
While he acknowledges he misses home and wishes he could be with his kids at the dinner table, Flacco is trying to make the best of his situation. “I’d rather be there, listening to what they’re talking about, but if I’m here, I might as well enjoy it,” he remarked.
Flacco plans to travel back home this weekend for road games against the New York Jets and the Bengals, giving him the chance to reunite with his family. So far, he holds a 1-1 record with his new team, notably throwing for 342 yards in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
