DOJ to Send Election Observers to California and New Jersey
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday its intention to deploy federal election observers in California and New Jersey for next month’s elections. This move is aimed at closely monitoring the electoral process in both states.
In New Jersey, there’s an open gubernatorial seat, as Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is set to retire. Meanwhile, California is introducing a voting measure that seeks to redraw its state legislative maps to benefit Democrats—this is in contrast to states like Texas, which have adjusted their maps to favor Republicans.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the importance of transparency in public opinion polls, asserting that it builds confidence in the electoral process. She stated that the DOJ is committed to maintaining high standards of election integrity.
As Election Day approaches, the influence of former President Trump remains prominent in this contentious political landscape.
Bondi mentioned that the federal observers will focus on areas like Passaic County in New Jersey and various counties in California—Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside, and Fresno—to ensure transparency and compliance with federal laws surrounding voting.
Officials from both Republican parties in these states have pushed for the presence of federal observers. Colin Rankin, the California Republican Party Chairman, expressed concerns about reported instances of fraud in recent elections, arguing this could undermine voter confidence in the outcomes.
Similarly, the New Jersey Republican Party highlighted worries about potential inconsistencies in mail-in voting, particularly in Passaic County, which has a significant Latino demographic that previously leaned Democratic but supported Trump in 2024.
In response, Democrats have criticized the DOJ’s decision. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office described it as an “intimidation tactic,” arguing that this intervention serves to undermine the integrity of California’s electoral process regarding a state constitutional amendment.
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin also slammed the DOJ’s actions as “highly inappropriate” for lacking a justified reason. Conversely, Los Angeles County Clerk Dean Logan asserted that election monitors are a standard procedure nationwide and that voters can trust their ballots will be handled securely and accurately.
Local election observers from both political parties are already present, and federal observers have been sent in the past to regions with histories of voting rights violations. Notably, during the last presidential election, some Republican-led states restricted federal observers from entering certain areas.
