12-Year-Old Girl Recovering from Bullet Wound
A 12-year-old girl has returned home after a devastating shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis left her with a bullet lodged in her brain. Her family described her recovery as “miraculous,” especially as it coincides with her birthday.
On August 27, Sofia Forkas was critically injured during a mass shooting at the Church of the Annunciation, where two other children tragically lost their lives, along with 18 others sustaining injuries.
Initially, doctors expressed concerns about Sofia’s chances of survival following the horrific event, but she defied the odds and made an impressive recovery.
“It’s truly a miracle that Sofia survived this horrific attack,” her parents, Amy and Tom Forchus, stated last month. “Her healing trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary.”
Amy Forchus works as a pediatric critical care nurse in Minneapolis, and she was at the hospital helping victims of the shooting before realizing her daughter was among them.
Fast forward two months, and Sofia was able to return home just in time to celebrate her 13th birthday. Her parents expressed their joy on a GoFundMe page set up to support her recovery, marking the day as one of their most special moments.
Despite the elation of bringing Sofia home, her family noted that the road to full recovery remains long. They shared updates about her continued progress, highlighting improvements in her communication skills and physical activities like walking, swimming, and even dribbling a basketball.
The shooting, which took place in a church school previously attended by the shooter, Robin Westman, resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 17 others. Although the motive is still under investigation, a manifesto released by Westman suggested he targeted schools and harbored a concerning fascination with school shootings.
