Florida Man Arrested After Brutal Attack Leaves Victim in Coma

A man in Florida is facing felony charges after a shocking incident was captured on surveillance footage, where he struck another man from behind, resulting in the victim being left in a coma.

The event unfolded on October 11 at the entrance of an Aldi grocery store located in Lauderdale Lakes, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The video evidence showed the suspect approaching the victim, who was with a service dog, and then delivering a violent punch that caused the victim to collapse and sustain severe injuries.

After the attack, the victim was rushed to the hospital and placed in a coma. His family made a public appeal for help in identifying the assailant.

On October 22, authorities apprehended 45-year-old D’Andrea Johnson following a tip-off from the community. He has since been charged with a felony related to serious bodily injury, permanent disability, or disfigurement.

Additional footage from the store indicates that Johnson and the victim had interacted prior to the assault, with Johnson allegedly lingering near the entrance before the attack took place.

A prosecutor described the video as “brutal” during a court session, stating: “There is no indication that this was an act of self-defense. Mr. Johnson waited for the victim and then attacked him without provocation.” The prosecutor emphasized the severity of the victim’s condition.

In response, Johnson’s attorney suggested there was more context to the situation, claiming that the victim’s pit bull had attacked Johnson first.

However, prosecutors dismissed this argument, stating that there was no sign the dog posed a threat, and that no other witnesses showed concern during the incident.

Johnson remains in custody at the Broward County Jail with a bail set at $100,000. The investigation is still underway, and the victim’s identity has not been disclosed.
